Of course Tucker Crowe was in pain when he made [the record], but he couldn't just march into a recording studio and start howling. He'd have sounded mad and pathetic. He had to calm the rage, tame it and shape it so that it could be contained in the tight-fitting songs. Then he had to dress it up so that it sounded more like itself. Nick Hornby
About This Quote

In the book, "Tucker Crowe: A Life In Words and Music," author Howard Sounes tells how Tucker Crowe reacted when he met Joe Strummer of the Clash. Tucker had been a huge fan of The Clash and was thrilled to meet one of his idols. He was also a bit nervous about meeting Strummer, however, as he had read that Strummer was a bit mad. After they met, Tucker says that he was not mad at all and that Strummer couldn’t have been more normal.

What struck him as most was how normal Strummer seemed, as he wasn’t all crazy and out of control as he expected. In reality, though, his emotions had been so strongly captured in his music that it took some time for those emotions to calm down. Ultimately, Tucker said that it took him a whole year before he could listen to the record again without feeling a big lump in his throat.
